Half of Americans believe vax can kill. 1 in 4 believe they know someone it DID kill.

Rasmussen Reports conducted a survey in December 2022 about the “Died Suddenly” phenomenon. The survey asked respondents:

• whether they have received a COVID-19 vaccination

• whether they believe that side effects of COVID-19 vaccines have caused a significant number of unexplained deaths

• whether they personally know anyone whose death they think may have been caused by side effects of COVID-19 vaccines

• what their belief is on whether there are legitimate reasons to be concerned about the safety of COVID-19 vaccines or whether people who worry about vaccine safety are spreading conspiracy theories.

The topline results are going to keep Ashish Jha up at night - or at least - you would think it would!

• 49% of American adults believe that side effects of COVID-19 vaccines have caused a significant number of unexplained deaths, including 28% who think it is very likely.

• 37% of respondents did not believe that a significant number of deaths have been caused by vaccine side effects, while 14% were not sure.

• 28% of adults say they personally know someone whose death they think may have been caused by side effects of COVID-19 vaccines, while 61% do not and 10% are not sure.

• 48% of Americans believe that there are legitimate reasons to be concerned about the safety of COVID-19 vaccines, while 37% think that people who worry about vaccine safety are spreading conspiracy theories, and 15% are not sure.

As to politics Rass. puts it this way:

More Democrats (85%) than Republicans (63%) or those not affiliated with either major party (64%) have been vaccinated against COVID-19. More Republicans (60%) than Democrats (44%) or the unaffiliated (43%) think there are legitimate reasons to be concerned about the safety of COVID-19 vaccines. However, there is less political difference in the number who suspect someone they know might have died from vaccine side effects – 33% of Democrats and 26% of both Republicans and the unaffiliated.

First, 71% of survey respondents (adults) claim to be vaccinated in the Rass. survey but the official numbers put it well above 85%. (The CovidVaxView phone survey puts it at like 87%). Is this because Rass. has a conservative audience? Maybe. But consider there are MANY reasons why someone would fib on this:

One reason could be fear of stigma or discrimination or they could lose their job! Some people may be concerned about being judged or treated differently if they admit to not having received the vaccine. Another reason could be a lack of access to the vaccine. Some adults may not have had the opportunity to get vaccinated due to limited availability or logistical barriers. Additionally, some adults may be hesitant to trust or believe in the efficacy of the vaccine, and may therefore be unwilling to admit to having received it. Finally, some adults may simply not remember whether they have been vaccinated, especially if it was some time ago - believe it or not there are people who don’t follow this daily like you and I (we are definitely the exception here friends).

Next is this detail on the age breakdown for the question: “Do you personally know anyone whose death you think may have been caused by side effects of COVID-19 vaccines?”

Notice that 18-39 stat is much higher than the other older demographics @ 35%

There is ancillary data around the surveys picking up injuries from the vaccine that people have experienced including this breakdown by vax attitude showing that perhaps as much as 7% of those who definitely will NOT get the BIVALENT booster had a bad reaction to the vaccine that they took earlier.
